• Who We Are

  The Brunswick Centre was the name given to Calderdale HIV/AIDS Link (CHAL) in 2002 when it extended it's HIV services into Kirklees.

• Values and Principles

  The Brunswick Centre enables people from the communities we serve to make informed choices, build healthier relationships and live positive lives free of stigma.

  Safeguarding is everyone's responsibility and underpins our approach to delivering services, working with service users and the recruitment of staff, sessional workers and volunteers.

• HIV Support

  The HIV Support Team aims to work with service users in a holistic way so that their social care needs are met and their well-being is maintained and improved.

• Counselling

  It can help to talk in confidence to a skilled professional, and the Brunswick Centre can offer counselling sessions with a qualified and experienced counsellor free of charge.

• HIV Prevention

  The HIV Prevention team targets interventions at communities most at risk of HIV. Staff work to inform, empower and give support to individuals from these at-risk communities to prevent HIV transmission.

• What is HIV?

  HIV stands for Human Immunodeficiency Virus. It is a virus that damages the cells in a person’s immune system and weakens the body’s ability to fight everyday infections and disease.

• U=U

  U=U stands for Undetectable equals Untransmittable.

• HIV stigma

  Ever since the first cases of AIDS in the early 1980s, people with HIV have been stigmatised. Find out more.

• Health and Wellbeing

  We offer themed wellbeing workshops; dance, yoga and fitness classes; run a regular walking group; and have our own allotment. Find out more.

• Nutrition and Dietetic Support

  We offer a nutrition and dietetic service at the Brunswick Centre for anyone living with HIV. Our registered dietitian has years of experience of working with adults, children and families living with HIV both in the UK and South Africa.

• Benefits and Welfare Rights

  We have a dedicated specialist worker, Chris Saxon, who provides welfare benefits advice and support to residents of Kirklees and Calderdale who are living with HIV and to their carers. Find out more.

• Hardship Support

  The HIV Support team are aware of the financial hardship and poverty many people with HIV face and how this can have a detrimental effect on health and wellbeing.

• LGBTQ+ yOUTh Service

  The yOUTh Service works across all of Calderdale and Kirklees, providing support to LGBTQ+ young people, their parents and carers.

  Our yOUTh group sessions run weekly, Monday to Wednesday! Find out more.

• Family Support

  We have a dedicated family support worker, Caz Morreale, who will offer support to LGBTQ+ young people, their parents, carers and siblings.

• What is it like locally for LGBTQ+ young people?

  Dr Eleanor Formby and Dr Jo Woodiwiss were commissioned by the Brunswick Centre to undertake local research and an evaluation of the yOUTh service in Kirklees. Find out more.

• Training

  We offer briefings, basic awareness sessions, information around our work and bespoke in-depth sessions to meet your specific requirements.

• Chemsex

  Chemsex is defined by the use of three specific drugs (“chems”) in a sexual context.

• Post-Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP)

  PEP is a course of HIV medication that you take if you have been at risk of HIV infection within 72 hours (three days). It may prevent you from becoming infected with HIV.

• Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP)

  PrEP is medication that you take to stop yourself from getting HIV.

• Condoms

  Condoms are the best way of preventing the spread of sexually transmitted infections, including HIV. They can also protect against unwanted pregnancy.

• Outreach

  Our HIV Prevention team work actively in cruising grounds across Calderdale and Kirklees, providing condoms and lube, information and support around HIV, sexual health and any other issues that may affect wellbeing.

• Formula Milk Programme

  Formula milk is the recommended alternative for HIV positive mothers and the Brunswick Centre will supply, free of charge.

• HIV Testing

  We offer free, rapid and confidential HIV testing at drop-in sessions and if you can't get to any of these you can phone and book an appointment.

• Well Proud - LGBTQ+ Wellbeing

  Brunswick is here to help you feel great, live well, and be proud — connecting you to a wide range of health and wellbeing support designed for LGBTQ+ people.

• Understanding HIV

  In some Black and Black African communities, conversations about sex and sexual health can feel difficult or private. Having the right information puts you in control of your health, your relationships, and your future.

• Looking After Yourself

  Looking after your sexual health can be about choosing what works for you, your relationships, and your lifestyle.

• Condoms by Post

  We supply condoms and lube to communities at increased risk of HIV infection; these can be collected from our offices in Huddersfield and Halifax or we can post them out to you.

• I've Tested for HIV, Have You?

  'I've Tested for HIV, Have You' aims to raise awareness of HIV and promote HIV testing in local communities in Kirklees and Calderdale.

• Queer as Smoke

  'Queer as Smoke' aims to raise awareness of smoking in LGBTQ+ communities and promote local smoking cessation provision, including the offer of vaping, in Calderdale and Kirklees.

  'Are you PrEPared?' aims to raise awareness of PrEP (Pre-exposure prophylaxis) and to increase uptake in communities likely to be exposed to HIV.

• What's In A Name?

  The 'What's In A Name?' campaign aims to offer information and guidance on how to respond when a young person informs you that they wish to be known as a different name and/or pronouns.

• Queer as Smoke Calderdale

  Queer as Smoke Calderdale is a proud partnership between Yorkshire Smokefree service and The Brunswick Centre, supported by Calderdale Council Public Health. Stopping smoking is one of the best things you can do for your health. Help and support is available.

• Swap to Stop

  Get a free vape starter kit, and stop smoking cigarettes for good.

• World AIDS Day

  December 1st is World AIDS Day and at The Brunswick Centre we are remembering those who were affected by HIV.

  Cancer awareness information for cisgender men, transgender women, non-binary people, and anyone assigned male at birth.

• Queer Bits – Anal cancer awareness for people living with HIV

  People living with HIV may face increased risks for certain cancers. Early detection, routine healthcare, and awareness of symptoms can improve outcomes.

• Not Any Less Campaign

  This campaign is being developed by young people from Brunswick’s LGBTQ+ youth groups to celebrate the diversity of LGBTQ+ lives and challenge stereotypes around gender, sexuality and identity.
