Celebrating Black History Month
At Brunswick, we're supporting Black History Month!
Every October, Black History Month provides an opportunity to celebrate Black history, heritage and culture, recognise the contributions Black people have made to life in the UK, and learn more about the experiences and stories that have shaped our communities.
The theme this year is 'Honouring Our Communities'
This year’s theme recognises the people whose everyday contributions help shape, support and strengthen Black communities across the UK.
Honouring Our Communities encourages us to recognise these contributions, share people’s stories and think about whose work and experiences may have previously gone unseen.
Black communities have different histories, cultures, identities and experiences, and all form part of Britain’s past, present and future.

Big Drum and Dance - Wednesday 7th October 2026
The University of Huddersfield is marking Black History Month with a Big Drum and Dance performance as part of its programme for October.
Time: 12:30pm – 1:30pm

Daphne Steele Day - Thursday 15th October 2026
An event celebrating Daphne Steele as part of the University’s Black History Month programme.
Born in Guyana, Daphne Steele became the first Black matron in the NHS when she was appointed matron of St James’ Hospital in Balby, Doncaster, in 1964. She later lived and worked in the Huddersfield area.

Regional Black History Awards Ceremony - Saturday 17th October 2026
Organised by UNISON Kirklees Local Government Branch, the fourth Regional Black History Month Awards celebrate Black workers, community leaders and others making a difference across Yorkshire and Humberside.
Awards include Community Champion, Young Trailblazer, Culture & Heritage, Inspirational Leadership and Social Justice & Solidarity.

England's Hidden History - Sunday 18th October 2026
Historian Dr Onyeka Nubia explores the lives of people of African descent living in Tudor England, drawing on research from archives and parish records to uncover stories that have often been overlooked.
