Becoming Chair of Trustees

The Brunswick Centre recently shared about my appointment Chair of the Board of Trustees. As part of that I’ve been asked to write a few observations in the form of a “blog”. Not sure where to start, I thought it best to start at the beginning.

This milestone in my career is not just a new chapter but a culmination of a deeply rewarding journey that began in 2007.

Back in 2007, I started my journey with this organisation as a student social worker. Fresh-faced and eager to make a difference, I was immediately struck by the incredible dedication and passion of everyone at Brunswick. The experience was transformative, offering me a firsthand look at the profound impact a committed team can have on individuals and communities, particularly those who are stigmatised and marginalised.

After completing my studies, I was determined to stay connected… I volunteered in various capacities, gaining deeper insights and a stronger connection to our mission. I also came to work at Brunswick for a number of years until I got a job in Manchester where I had relocated.

But, in 2013, I had the privilege of being appointed as a trustee. This role allowed me tocome back and contribute on a strategic level, helping shape the future direction of the charity while learning from a skilled board of trustees.

Serving as a trustee over the past eleven years has been an incredible journey. I’ve witnessed firsthand the challenges and triumphs that come with managing and growing a charity. From navigating financial constraints to expanding our programs and services, each experience has reinforced my commitment to our cause and deepened my understanding of what it takes to lead effectively.

During my tenure, I’ve been part of some truly remarkable initiatives. We’ve launched new programs that have significantly broadened our reach and impact, developed stronger community partnerships, and enhanced our volunteer engagement. These achievements are a testament to the collective effort and unwavering dedication of our staff, volunteers, and beneficiaries and supporters.

Stepping into the role of Chair of the Board feels like a natural progression of my journey with this charity. It’s a role that I accept with great humility and a profound sense of responsibility. I am deeply committed to continuing our mission and ensuring that we remain a beacon of hope and support for those we serve.

Looking ahead, I am excited about the future and the opportunities that lie before us. My primary focus will be on continuing to foster a culture of collaboration, partnerships and innovation, ensuring that we remain adaptable and responsive to the ever-changing needs of our communities of identity and geography. I believe that by harnessing the collective wisdom and passion of our communities, we can achieve even greater impact and reach new heights.

I am also committed to transparency and open communication. I believe that our strength lies in our ability to listen, learn, and grow together. As Chair, I will work diligently to ensure that every voice is heard and valued, and that we continue to build an inclusive and supportive environment for all.

In closing, I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to everyone who has been part of my journey thus far. To our dedicated staff, volunteers, fellow board members, and supporters – thank you for your trust, your passion, and your unwavering support. I am excited to embark on this new chapter with all of you and to continue making a positive difference in the lives of those we serve.

Here’s to the future and to the incredible journey ahead!
