Free Pregnancy Testing
Overview :
We can offer you free pregnany tests and also advice on what to do next...and from Brunswick Centre offices.
About half of pregnancies are planned. If you are thinking about having a baby then this is a really good time to think about your own heath, and that of your partner. Making some changes to your life style for a period of time could improve your health, increase your fertility and reduce the risks of miscarriage and fetal abnormality.
Things to consider :
If you've had unprotected sex in the last 5 days you are still in time to use Emergency Contraception.
If you think you could be pregnant, you will need to get a pregnancy test. Pregnancy tests are very reliable and can be done 2 to 3 weeks after unprotected sex, or on the first day of a missed period. Before this time, the level of hormones produced by the pregnancy is too low to show up on the test and you may get a 'false negative' result.
Free pregnancy tests may be available from :
- The Brunswick offices
- Your GP
- A family planning clinic
- Some genitourinary medicine (GUM)/sexual health clinics
- A Brook or other young people's clinic
You can pay to have a test at :
- (BPAS) British Pregnancy Advisory Service clinics
- Marie Stopes clinics
All services are confidential. Contact details are available from us at the offices.
Many pharmacies offer pregnancy testing and sell home pregnancy tests. These are very reliable but it is important that you follow the instructions exactly if you do a test at home.
Very rarely, these tests will show a negative result when you may in fact be pregnant. Signs of pregnancy usually appear two to three weeks after conception. They vary from woman to woman but may include: missing a period, a shorter, lighter period than usual, swelling or tenderness in the breasts, frequent peeing, feeling tired, nausea or vomiting (known as morning sickness, but not always in the morning), feeling bloated or period-like cramps, appetite changes or mood changes.
If you know you are pregnant, or think you may be, it is important that you discuss your choices with someone straight away. You can talk to your own GP, a doctor or nurse at one of the clinics listed above or call the national FPA helpline on .
